Overheating Engine

What to do when car is overheating September 16, 2010

First step when a vehicle is running hot is to pull over and shut down the engine.  If it is safe open the hood of the vehicle.  Be careful of steam.  If needed you may need to wait until the car cools down before doing this.  After the car has cooled completely, check the coolant overflow bottle level.  What your looking for in the coolant resevoir tank is the level too full and pouring out of the resevoir, or it is completely empty.  If the resevoir is empty you can start by adding coolant or water directly into the resevoir.  The next step, on a completely cooled down engine is to remove the radiator cap.  This cap is a pressure cap, so if the car is not completely cooled you will burn yourself severely.  Only remove this cap when the engine is completely cooled down.  Open the cap very slowly, like opening a can of shaken up pop.  Once the cap is open, look in the radiator to see if you can see any coolant.  If not, you can add coolant directly to the radiator.  Most cooling systems hold aproximately 2 gallons of coolant.  If the car is overheating you may not get a full 2 gallons in system.  Once the sysem is completely full, cap off radiator.  Restart vehicle.  Check the temperature gauge again, don't let the needle go into the red on the temperature gauge.  You can drive the vehicle at this time, but you must keep an eye on  the temperature gauge.   If it approaches the red again you will need to pull over and shut the car off again.  It is a good idea to have a car with a cooling system concern checked by a professional.  Please feel free to contact us any time.  Triangle auto service, 4060 N.
